Antique crushed silk velvet and silk tapestry embroidered coverlet was found in a French Chateau’s estate sale. Likely circa 1890/1900 or earlier. Coverlet is made with 9 & 1/2 inch crushed silk velvet panels alternating with 6 & 1/2 inch silk open weave fabric masterfully embroidered in silk threads in a myriad variety of tapestry stitches, decorative fillings with silver threads accents. Palette includes; pinks, blues and greens, silver grey, olive, golds and cocoa browns. Silk and embroidered panels are bordered with thick silk cord and hand made tassels and rosettes. French coverlet has a hand quilted thick cotton and silk satin batting made separately and sewn to the Crushed silk velvet and embroidered top. This would make it easy to replace if you wanted a new backing as it is to delicate for much use. Coverlet measures about 56 by 66 inches and covers a full size bed.
Condition: Coverlet is in excellent antique condition with no wear or loose stitches to the silk embroidery. Beautiful muted coloring with no apparent fading. I found one small pin hole to the silk open weave fabric. There is scattered light tiny pin dot darker patina which is not noticeable unless you look for it. Crushed silk velvet is in excellent antique condition. Silk satin quilted backing has several small darker stains and several 3 inch separation/frays that could be stitched back into place. All is reflected in the price of this exceptional coverlet.
Antique French coverlet displays beautifully and you have to look for these small imperfections.
