This is a glass encased embroidery of Jesus with a lamb.
In Christianity, according to a sermon by Augustine, the lamb symbolizes Christ's sacrifice ("He endured death as a lamb." Augustine, Sermon 375A). Exquisite stump work embroidery includes a silk draped figure with a lamb encircled with roses, metal sequins and some gold bullion stitches. Diameter in 3.5 inches. There is a silk braided cord in purple and gold, and hand made embellishments. Edged in flat gold metal. Back is a piece of green silk. Condition is excellent antique as shown. Likely 1880's or earlier.
Purchased in France.
